Historical Museum Lecture Series

The Historical Museum Lectures provide insights into the history of our region. They begin in the late afternoon so guests have the opportunity to enjoy our museum and gift shop beforehand and drive home before dark. Light refreshments are provided. The events are held in the Spirit Center’s Johanna Room at the Center for Benedictine Life at the Monastery of St. Gertrude; located at 465 Keuterville Road, Cottonwood, Idaho.

In Selway Shadows – the Last Flight of 148Z
Presented by Richard Holmes

On June 11, 1979, the US Forest Service endured its deadliest aviation disaster when a DC-3 with 12 people aboard crashed near Moose Creek Ranger Station.  Cottonwood’s Bryant Stringham was one of the two people who survived. Holm spent eight years researching and writing this book. His presentation will include detailed information on the flight, possible causes, people, rescues and recovery, as well as many unique “happenstance” moments. Books will be available to buy after the presentation as the museum gift shop.

Richard Holm is a fourth-generation Idahoan who holds a commercial pilot license with a multi-engine instrument rating and many hours of back country flying. He is an outdoorsman with an abiding interest in Idaho history and has written other books about fire lookouts and back country flying. He lives in McCall, Idaho, with his wife Amy and their two children.
